Northeast Georgia Lake Towns: Flowery Branch to Gainesville

Ask five people where to live in Northeast Georgia and you will get five different answers, because the towns around Lake Lanier are genuinely different places. Here is a quick portrait of the five I serve most often, gathered from showing homes in each.

Flowery Branch: lake town with a preserved Main Street

Flowery Branch was founded in 1874 as a stop on the Air-Line Railroad, and its preserved Old Town still centers on a restored historic train depot. It sits right on the shores of Lake Lanier and hosts the Atlanta Falcons' training camp each summer. Buyers here get real lake proximity with a walkable downtown and a convenient drive to Atlanta.

Braselton: resort country across four counties

Braselton is one of the few towns in Georgia that reaches across four counties: Jackson, Hall, Gwinnett, and Barrow. It is home to Château Élan, the 3,500-acre winery and resort that opened in 1981 as the first winery in Georgia since Prohibition. The character skews estate and countryside, with acreage, equestrian property, and resort living nearby.

Hoschton: the quiet railroad town

Hoschton was founded in 1881 by the four Hosch brothers, who wanted the new railroad to pass through their land. The restored 1883 depot still anchors Main Street. It is the smallest of the towns on this list, with a preservation-minded, neighborly character that suits buyers who want quiet streets and bigger lots.

Buford: the south end's hub

Buford anchors the south end of Lake Lanier near Buford Dam, with Lake Lanier Islands on its doorstep and the Mall of Georgia minutes away. It also runs its own independent city school district, a real draw for families. If you want the lake and everything else within easy reach, Buford is hard to beat.

Gainesville: the city at the lake's north end

Gainesville is the Hall County seat and the lake's north-end city. Lake Lanier Olympic Park hosted rowing during the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, and Gainesville Marina keeps boaters coming and going year-round. It offers the fullest city life of the five: shopping, dining, hospitals, and the lake a short drive from almost anywhere in town.
